How do you heat your home and keep Heating prices low? With natural gas prices rocketing sky high - what are you doing to keep your heating bills at a minimal? Any unique ideas to heat up your place without giving up your arm this coming winter? Currently we have an air-forced duct system in place. Anyway, give me ideas on how to maintain a nice warm house this winter, I do not want to make this a major project -- keep it nice and simple. I also have two non-working fireplaces in this old house, I don't have the slightest idea how to use / maintain one. Currently there are sealed off, and if I get it going ... will it even be safe? will it be worth it ? Please share your ideas with me -- I am desperate! ~thanks

So... what do you do?

Keeping firearms safe, but in reach in an emergency? How do YOU keep your firearms safe from others (children-unotherized users), but able to get to fast in an emergency? I personaly use 2 guns for home protection, a 12gauge remington 870 express (with 00' buck) in my room under my matress and boxspring so when im sleeping i can get it as soon as i wake up and during the day i just lock my bedroom door. The other gun is use is a 40. Smith and wesson and i keep that mounted behind a dresser as soon as you open the front door. (it also has a holster which is very hard to get open if you dont know how) and no one would think to look behind a dresser so i consider that safe.

After a repair person leaves my home, right away, i check to make sure the windows doors in the room they were in are still locked, when i'm home alone with my child I don't answer the door unless its someone I know.
How do YOU keep your car safe? Our cars are mostlikely the 2nd most expensive thing we own (after our homes). No matter what part of town you live in auto theft is a concern, expecially if you drive a nice vicheal. How do YOU keep your car safe and out of the hands of stoner 17 year old car thieves? Which do you think would keep your family safer from a potential home invasion? Having a gun in your house or having a dog such as a german shepard or doberman (I don't mention a pit bull or Rottweiler because these breeds can be especially aggressive)? If your answer is a gun how do you respond to the fact that most guns kept at home which are used, are far more likely to be used on a family member than a home invader? When a stranger goes near a house with a dog, the dog barks like crazy. Have you ever heard a German Sheperd or Doberman bark when their upset? I highly doubt anyone would be foolish enough to try and break into a house with one of these dogs present. On the other hand, from what I see in the news, guns are rarely any help.

Do you have any tips on how to keep your purse safe at six flags? I want to bring my camera with me to six flags, and I plan on putting it in my purse. I'm worried that my stuff might get stolen while I'm on a ride. Do you think I'm overreacting and my camera should be fine, or should I just leave my camera at home?
How far would you go to protect your family from a home invader? Your home should be your safe haven; a place where you and your family (kids, spouse, etc) should be able to eat, sleep, relax, be happy and content. I think more people should learn to respect your home, and the boundaries of your property, whether it's a door, gate, sidewalk, etc. If a thief or burglar invades my property, I feel I'm well within my rights to protect my family to the fullest extent of the law. If I even suspect that my family's lives or well-being is in danger, I'm going to take ANY action I feel is necessary to keep them safe. When a thief makes a decision to steal, he should also realize he's taking his life into his own hands. A homeowner has NO idea if a thief has a weapon, or what kind. If I confront a thief in my living room, and I have a gun handy, I'll shoot to kill. He's definitely not getting by me, if I can help it. Now, with all that in mind, what is your opinion on this?
what was it like after your delivery when you took your baby home? I know it's probably a silly question, but I'm in the beginning of my third trimester (first pregnancy) and was wondering what could the first few days/nights of having the baby home would consist of. Were you so tired/sore that you couldn't move? Was your baby incredibly responsive to you (your voice, ect)? Did they appear to be happy, hyper, bouncy, eager to be with you all the time? Sorry for so many questions within a question. I'm just curious and very excited. I heard that newborns and babies in general don't sleep much and that they shouldn't sleep on their backs because of risk of SIDS. How did you keep your little ones from laying on their backs? Do you have a technique? A friend of mine had her baby sleep with her in bed, is that really safe? I have the book What To Expect When You're Expecting and it's been very helpful during this pregnancy, but I'd like to hear what everyone else has to say too. Thank you so much in advance!
How has your home changed since you've had the baby? Our home just keeps getting more and more SAFE! Everything is getting higher, blocked off, softer .... we love it but it's so weird. What about you?
What kind of things are parents doing to keep kids safe on the net? How do you keep your kids safe on the net these days? How can you keep a computer safe for research projects and still have it safe? Can you block it from yahoo answers, my space and email while you are gone? Are there educational DVDs that are effective to train kids about internet dangers? The internet is wonderful and some kids are okay with it, but how do we keep it safe for kids and teens? I know as a kid I was a latch key kid and if I had to wait until my parents got home to do my homework it would have never gotten done.
Would you feel safe if you forgot your cell phone at home? What would you do, you turn around to get it or keep going?
Would you keep your teen home from school if...? there were written threats being found in the school? It started about a month ago. Things found on the bathroom wall in the boys room. Then found the same threats on the girls bathroom wall. Yesterday there was a note found. The only info given out is that the threats say 73 kids will die. Handwriting analists determined all the writing was from the same individual. The school went into lockdown yesterday, the kids were dismissed and the school searched. Today the kids were made to enter through 1 door with police and detectives everywhere (kids not searched on entry??). I don't want my daughter to go to school, but how long do you keep them home? You never really know it's safe, but now I am really nervous. We live in a smaller quiet town and you never really think it will happen here...and here we go. I can't hide her out forever, but I can't in good concience send her to school with this going on. I feel paranoid and ridiculous. Thank you everyone for confirming what I believed to be the best action to take. She has 2 1/2 weeks left of school so hopefully they will catch the kid who is doing this. Until then we will take it day by day. She is an honor roll student and will do fine working from home the next few weeks if that is what we need to do. I can't believe this is the way our kids have to live. I can't even imagine living in a school district or town/city where things like this are common. Thank you again. Dee I am sorry I put it under "homeschool" I meant to get it to a parenting /school section. Well she's home...and another "incident" today. We are going to have a meeting but no matter how safe they say things are I am keeping her home. I would say half of the kids are not in school.
Why is President Bush not getting enough credit for doing many things right--e.g.keeping us safe at home? I am tired of hearing people how he has screwed up the country--hey talk to an Indian or a East European who cowers each time they go through a parking lot--don't know which car will blow up. As to economy--remember there are so many more home owners today, so what if a few defaulted. As to Iraq--Middle east muslim nutbags are afraid to attack America because of Bush. They know what happened after 9/11--their lovely leader Osama is now eating dirt! Of course Bush did not do everything right. He should have put in regulations on banks and non-banks. He should not have been lulled into thinking he had won Iraq war--but most of what he sought, he accomplished. A true man of conviction, he did not raise taxes, went after America's enemies with a vengence and was not afraid of following his convictions. See if you really put your thinking cap on, you will admire George Bush. But if you are a mindless slogan reader, you will be totally one sided and see no good side of him.

How could you keep your family safe in one of these tornado outbreaks ? I've just moved to oklahoma city in oklahoma where is mostly known as tornado alley, i didn't want to move but i had to because of my job relocation. Since i've heard on television on the news back in 1999 about the deadliest may 3rd 1999 tornado outbreak in history, i never would want to move here if it wasn't for my job. But does anything like that ever happen here often ? People said that tornadoes here in Oklahoma forms into the deadly F5 tornadoes that is about a mile wide in diameter. What are some ways i could make sure my wife & family is safe during one of these outbreaks if I'm away from home ? Also, how could i keep myself safe if i am on the 34th floor in an building with only express elevators ? The elevators don't have stops between floors Lobby - 29th. I'm very curious about my family's safety and mine's in case if one of these tornado outbreaks occurs
You have 5 minutes to grab 3 things from your home which is about to be destroyed. What 3 items? Let's assume you are sure there are no people or pets to worry about, so what 3 things are you going to remove and keep safe in less than five minutes before your home is completely wiped out?
When is it safe to interact with your Syrian hamster after you bring it home? So I'm getting a Syrian Hamster soon, and I just want to know when I will be able to hold it, put it in it's ball, play with it.. etc.. etc. Also, when should I first feed it after it comes home? Immediately? And one more thing: Should I put a towel or something over the top of the cage to keep it quiet and dark?
Does anyone know of a spell/blessing to protect your home in bad weather? Hurricane coming our way! I want to bless the house to keep it safe, any suggestions, prayers, or even spells? Thanks
what do you do to keep your dog occupied when your not home? my dog has got seperation anxiety and i dont want to give her medication unless i really have to there-for im looking for safe and interesting ways to occupy her when im home. she is a yard dog, and isnt in the house when i go o work so things for the yard will be awesome if anyone has some ideas. im looking for home made treats and toys that keep your dog occupied and busy when their alone. ive been told about freezing water and attatching it to a bone, and when the water melts the bone will fall for the dog giving it a treat when your not home. does anyone have safe and other ways to occupy dogs? my dog has more than enough toys and im looking for other things to do. she is an 11 month old husky. and she is only outside during the day when im at work, then she's inside untill i go to bed as she is a big dog so she sleeps outside right at the back door where she can still see inside the house and she feels safer there.. i work full time meaning 38 hours a week ( sigh ) i have put the tv on for her but i have to turn it up loud so she can hear it. but i have thought of getting her a radio.
What have you personally done to child-proof your home? Sometimes I wonder if I have gone a bit "overboard" in the child-proofing department, but I've always been of of the belief that it is better to let a child roam her home freely, without constantly having to be told "No! No! No!" And I think that by making her environment safe and kid-friendly, it has really made her into a very independent little kid (she's 22 months old). But lately, I'm wondering if it would be better to have LESS child-proofing in the home, so she would learn what she *IS* and *IS NOT* allowed to do -- instead of just keeping it all out of her reach. I find that we have a lot of problems when we visit other people's houses. She wants to get into everything & doesn't understand why she can't run around like she normally does at home. Does that mean it's time to remove some of the things I've installed so she'll learn this? And what have you personally done in your own home to child-proof? Do you think you have too much, too little or just the right amount?
cassandra: RE: TO YOUR ANSWER ABOUT MY SONS CARSEAT.? YOUR RESPONSE: So, are you breastfeeding and keeping your child safe from the emotional trauma, social damage, and intellectual devastation of day care? Are you responding sensitively to your child? Are you giving him a soothing, safe home where he sleeps with/near his parents, is never hit, is talked to and sung with and held on demand? So, are you breastfeeding? YES, I AM keeping your child safe from the emotional trauma, social damage, and intellectual devastation of day care? I'M A SAHM, SO YES Are you responding sensitively to your child? Are you giving him a soothing, safe home where he sleeps with/near his parents, is never hit, is talked to and sung with and held on demand? HE'S THREE MONTHS OLD, BUT YES, WE COSLEEP, I WILL ABSOLUTELY NEVER HIT HIM AS I WAS HIT EVERYDAY AS A CHILD, AND I SING TO HIM PRETTY MUCH CONSTANTLY TO THE POINT WHERE MY HUSBAND HAS TO ASK ME TO HUSH SOMETIMES. Insuring his safety is my top priority right now. So, if we get in a wreck on the way to get his pictures make today and he is killed I won't have to live with that for the rest of my life thinking "Well, at least I had three months and was able to sing to him and play with him while he was here.." scorpiorn77074: There isn't one. It's a RE:(response) to her answer.

This is a public service announcement on ways to keep your homes safe this summer? Hello there, so as you all know, summer is officially upon us, and with that comes an increase in home and auto thefts. The increase in heat usually brings the ghetto blacks out of their little homes and into the streets, where they will most likely be loud, ask for money, and take things that do not belong to them, so here are some ways you can have a fun summer while keeping your belongings and yourselves safe. 1. At night, bring in all you lawn furniture and bird feeders (these are getting top dollar at pawn shops and are a hot theft item right now) 2. Chain up ll bicycles and make sure your garage is closed and locked. Lock your vehicle doors and park close to your home or under a street light. 3. Lock all your windows and doors, especially after sunset (this is crucial) 4. Do not cook any sort of soul or southern foods, especially after sunset. This includes chicken, collard greens, cornbread, or sweet potatoes. Blacks have a high sense of smell and if downwind, they could smell what your cookin and come lookin. 5. Post some job applications up in your neighborhood, better safe than sorry right? 6. Have a police siren recorded and ready in your CD or DVD player at all times 7. Do not venture out after dark unless you really have to. The cover of night allows for the blacks to be swift and sneaky. Your wallet is there one minute, the next..........its gone. It can happen that quickly. 8. If you hear rap music, ebonics, or smell the aroma of hair glue, do not hesitate to phone us, the police right away. Thats all for now, please contact us for any questions or concerns. We have put a few more patrols out at night and have are eyes and ears open for any signs of foul play. Please enjoy yourselves and here is to a safe and happy summer. And please remember, Never.........trust a big butt and a smile.

A lady from Nottingham used the toilets in her local supermarket and hung her bag on the hook behind the door only to see it being swiped over the top within seconds! A couple of days later the manager of the supermarket phoned to say they had her bag and when would she come to collect it? She turned up to meet a very puzzled man who knew nothing about the call and yes, when she got home her house had been burgled with the keys from her bag. What's a safe method to keep 1 loaded handgun at home for self-defense while keeping from child? Basically, I currently keep my weapons stored locked up and off site. I want to bring 1 handgun home for self-defense, but I absolutely don't want my kid to ever be able to gain access to it. It should be a way that I can access the gun fairly quickly (10 or 15 seconds?), but otherwise is very secure. Can you give me a recommendation. If it's a product, a link would be great. Thanks.

How to keep moisture out of a home safe? My home safe stays damp and causes all things made of paper to mold and mildew. Can anyone help me stop this?
How was Roman housing similar to our home today and how did it differ? The lower class Romans (plebeians) lived in apartment houses, called flats, above or behind their shops. Even tradesmen might have chosen to live in an apartment-building compound over their store, with maybe renters on the upper stories. Their own apartments might be quite roomy, sanitary and pleasant, occasionally with running water. But others were not that nice. In the flats an entire family (grandparents, parents, children) might all be crowded into one room, without running water. They had to haul their water in from public facilities. Fire was a very real threat because people were cooking meals in crowded quarters, and many of the flats were made of wood. They didn't have toilets in the flat so they had to use public ones. The upper class Romans (patricians) lived in single family homes, which in Ancient Rome meant the great grandparents, grandparents, parents, and kids of one family lived in a home together. Homes were made, quite often, of brick with red tile roofs, with rooms arranged around a central courtyard. The windows and balconies faced the courtyard, not the street, to keep homes safe from burglars. There were paintings on the walls and beautiful mosaics on the floor. There was very little furniture, and no carpeting. Wealthy Romans might have a house with a front door, bedrooms, an office, a kitchen, a dining room, a garden, a temple, an atrium, a toilet, and a private bath.

how to talk to my husband about keeping guns safe at home? The other day my 2 yr old daugther opened the gun case that was under the bed. I caught her and I told my husband. He just locked it and told her not to touch it. He told me he had it unlocked so that if anything happens he could get it faster. I was not aware that the case was unlocked. He also said the gun has a lock and it wasn't loaded and that even if it was she coudn't even pick it up, its a big gun, not sure what kind. He's very pro guns and believes that we have the right to defend ourselves. And I understand that, but I worry about our kids. I tried to talk to him about it but he quickly shut me down and told me his beliefs and he acussed me of being a Democrat and loving Obama. He is doing it for our protection. But I dont understand how is it ok that she was playing with it. I really dont know how to approach him about this. It bothers me. I'm going to tell him that this is what we should do. I'm going to look at the NRA website about safety. Thanks for the link. I am relieved to read what everyone has to say. I am going to first find out what we have and find out what we need to buy to keep them safe and I will put them away where my daugther can't reach them. Its my responsibility too. I thought I trusted that he was responsible about the guns. Im really troubled. But I think the best thing to do is to deal with it, put the guns in a safe place, locked up. I will continue to read the answers tomorrow.
Safe to keep motorcycle at home or apartment? A friend was storing their motorcycle in a back room at our apartment and the landlord told them to move it outside of the apartment because it was unsafe to keep gas in an enclosed area. Is there any truth to that? Is it actually unsafe to keep a motorcycle in an apartment? If you could please put references with your answers, that would be very helpful. Thanks.

She is small.. a kitten.. last night I decided to get another cat to keep her company. A friend had a cat who recently (within 3-4 months) had kittens. The cats were living in a barn. I brought home a cute little boy... Now that I have the cat home, he will not come to me (he runs and hides) and my cat is dying to play with her new friend. I've tried food, petting it (when I can catch it) etc.. how do I get this cat to understand he is in a safe place? I am really wanting to pet it and show it the ropes, (food placement, litter box, etc)... but I can't get it to come out long enough to show it everything is o.k. Any help is greatly appreciated.
How are some ways that we can help keep our elderly at home, and safe, and not have to be in nursing homes.? we need to be able to keep our parents and grandparents at home with us, and take care of them at our homes, and not stick them in some god awful nursing home, and have the devices to take care of them, and the help to do so, how can we do this as a family and how do we get the out side help to do this also.. ?? We are the only country that throw our elderly out to pasture and ignore them and we miss so much.. our children miss so much.. We need to be one family, and all live together, and learn from each other. and pass down traditions to the small ones. and bring in new traditions with each new marriage.. and each new baby.. We don't have to all live in the same house, but on the same land, in our own houses. in the same area, and take care of each other, we are put here on this earth to take care of each other, and we are not doing that, why is that ? why have we left our family, and we don't care about them any more, we don't help them any more? is the dollar that important now??

How difficult would it be to be successful doing computer training out of my home? I would like to do consumer-level computer training out of the large basement of my suburban home. I would also do onsite training. I would teach backups, file management, using malware-removal programs, MS Office, home networking, keeping kids safe online, basic hardware upgrades/repairs, using digital cameras/scanners/image editing, using the Internet better, etc. I have several years of experience teaching these things in a career college. I've found the career colleges to be a rip-off for students. I'm absolutely positive I could provide great training, I'm just concerned about the viability of this as a business.

With summer in full swing, I was wondering...How does one keep safe, health wise, while traveling? I vaguely remember a investigative report on the dangers of staying in hotels/motels. Things like personal safety and keeping valuables safe seem pretty straight forward. But this was dealing with things like body lice from the bedding, a meth lab, bodily fluids... I remember a hotel in Vegas where many of the guests needed to be treated for crabs (luckily it wasn't me), a few years ago. It was caused by the bedding when the maids came around. Without having to bring everything with you from home, how can you keep yourself safe?
