Why does the Vatican have their secrete vaults so heavily guarded?

What are they hiding? Doesn't it seem contradictory that a religion acts in such a way? No, it isn't an urban legend. I heard about it on the History channel when they were talking about the history of the Vatican. rukidding...I am not Christian. I am Pagan. And I am REALLY sure that the Vatican would be REALLY open with what they have hidden there?! Anyone who walks around in gold robes is not for the people OR GOD!

9. If those vaults are so secret, how do you know about them? I've been there and never heard of any "secret" or not so secret "vaults." Where's the link? Where's the evidence to back up your claim? I find it contradictory that people like you who claim to be a Christian can hold such hatred and contempt for the religion that was the first Christianity and has existed for more than 2 thousand years.

12. They probably have an authentic copy of the 'Gospel of Mary' in there. The only one available from the Nag Hammadi find was even redacted 1500 years ago. (It stops after a few tantalizing phrases and is replaced by gnostic text that goes off on a tangent.) Interesting that someone wanted to discredit her even back then. Too volatile.

It is a misconception to think they have vaults as say Fort Knox has vaults, but the Vatican does indeed have a secret archive or archives in which is stored many documents that relate to the church from the early days , normally lay people cannot visit them but researchers, Professors and the like can do by appointment, it would be of little use to you and me because the majority of these documents are in Greek and early Latin etc.

16. As one who has spent many lazy afternoons perusing the secret archives of the Vatican, I can say without reservation that you would be amazed at the stuff that's in there. It's not contradictory. It's just smart to preserve and secure things that can never be replaced, once lost.
