what kinds of plastic are safe to grow food in? ?

I want to grow lettuce in my home this winter. I have seen people grow food in things that were not made for the purpose ( office paper trays, bureau drawers, food service containers, white construction buckets). I know some plastics can leak dangerous chemicals into water, especially if they get scratched. I need shallow, lightweight containers with no holes. I might need to drill holes in some containers, and use others for liners. Any ideas? Thanks for helping.

  1. Our local Ace Hardware has pulp containers that I like to use for my vegetables. They look better than plastic & last a long time. They do have drainage holes so you would have to use a tray underneath. (I picked up some shallow baking trays from Ross to put underneath).
  2. generally any plastic that is u.v. stabilized should be alright ,
