my cat is constipated...shld i go to the vet or give him some safe home remedy?

my 4 yr old cat hasn't defecated since morning. he has been on dry diet all his life. since morning he has been drinking water, not much, and it doesnt even help him in relieving himself. he goes like every 15 mins to his litter box, pees a bit everytime and returns quiet disappointed. i had given him milk and he had lapped it up (he hates it as it causes him indigestion) but, alas, no success. what should i do? and he has peed in two rooms also. plz help. i want to know whether my cat is really constipated (i've checked his litter box, nothings there) or is there some other problem too?

  1. He needs the vet you could try a little cod liver oil if you have any good luck
  2. go to the vet. if he is constipated, they will unblock it for you. it wont be pretty but its the only thing you can do
  3. Try oil, fish oil is best. If he's constipated it will help, and it certainly won't hurt him.
  4. These constant trips to the litter box and peeing out of place indicates a possibly serious urinary tract infection. Maybe bladder stones or crystals or even a blockage.. I don't freak about going a day without a BM, but the little pees and constant trips is a huge red flag, especially if he was fixed at a very young age. Keep a very close eye on him. if he can't pee at all it is an emergency. Otherwise, it might be able to wait until morning to see if he does have a BM, but I suspect a UTI. He should go to the vet ASAP. Sorry, I know you don't want to hear that.
  5. I agree to take him 2 vet. May also have a UTI. If hes just constipated they can give him something to make him go.
  6. Take him to the vet without delay. It can happen that a cat (dogs too) eat some string or cotton they have found and it gets caught in the 'tubing' between their mouth and their stomach. The irritation caused by the string has effects similar to constipation. Over a short time, the string gets tighter and tighter and can eventually cut through the tissue with terrible results. If your cat has eaten string or cotton, DO NOT try to pull it out yourself!! Take him to the vet for a checkup and get expert guidance.
  7. First of all don't ever give the cat milk. That is one wrong thing people do..He is weened and once a cat is weened from its mother's milk, they should not have milk. As far as the constipation, give the cat a little tsp. of mineral oil. Buy an animal hyperdermic needle at the Pet Store for administering medications, and give it to the cat. Also, buy Friskies canned wet food..like chicken..give the cat a little wet food at evening meal..leave water down at all times. The wet food will loosen its bowel movements and make him go...Try it, the cat cannot be hurt by the mineral oil..or the wet food. If after these remedies, the cat continues to be constipated, then it may have some kind of blockage..and you should bring it to the Vet. Good Luck
