Safe Luxury

I have used two different kinds of flea meds on my dog is it safe to try another?

The vet gave him a heartworm/flea pill that gets rid of flea eggs and another monthly pill that gets rid of adult fleas. He was fine for a few days, but when I went home to visit my family, the family dog had fleas and he came home scratching. I used a flea comb to get rid of a few, but he still is scratching. I'm calling the vet when the office opens in a few hours, but any advice would be helpful. What is the best flea medicine?

  1. try napalm if it doesn't kill the fleas, at least you'll have something on hand to eat while you look for a new dog
  2. I would be using a topical, like Frontline, which is good for a full month. You just can not give your dog a bath for 2 days after the treatment, or 2 days before the treatment as it will render it ineffective.
  3. I use Frontline Plus and it has been very effective - but check with your vet first to find put if you can apply it so soon. You can use Capstar as a stop-gap but it's only good for a one-time kill.
  4. I would definetly check with your vet first because I don't what he has given your dog already! One thing you dont want to do is over dose your dog on flea medications. You need your vet advise on this.
  5. We don't use chemical flea treatment, we use tea tree oil, diluted with water in a garden sprayer, small rose sprayer I think, about 10 drops of tea tree and fill with water, spray everywhere with it, back bellies face etc then spray beds carpets anywhere the dog goes, including your own clothes if necessary.
  6. We use Advantage for both cats and both dogs and never see a flea in our home. We don't use any other flea treatment whatsoever. No sprays, no powders, no home treatments, no flea collars, no pills. Just topical Advantage once a month. It works.
