Safe Luxury

My mucous plug has just come out. I'm wondering if it is still safe to have sex?

This is my third pregnancy but the first time I have ever lost my mucous plug. I'm 39 weeks. I was at the doctors office today and my doctor checked my cervix (I was fully effaced and 2 cm dilated) when I got home I went to the washroom and when I wiped myself there was brown and bloody mucous on the toilet paper. I also had a bath right after and when I did there were bloody "strings", my husband called them, in the bath water. First of all should I be going to the hospital being so far along. Secondly is it safe to have sex if i still have'nt gone into labour in a day or two?

  1. i think it is safe- if your doctor didnt tell you not to then you should be fine. the good news is it can bring on labor.
  2. You need to ask your Dr., but I have heard no baths and no sex. You want to prevent infection that is easier to get once you have lost your plug. Please ask your Dr. about this though. good luck!
  3. when i was pregnant with my first (she is now 3 and a half, and I am now a little over 35 weeks with number two) they told me not to have sex, go swimming, or take a bath once I lost my plug. However, you can go for a week or so after you loose your plug before either your water breaks or you have the contractions and are dialated enough
  4. Yes still safe to have sex. It's normal to have bloody mucus after your cervix has been checked. I don't think you should go to the hospital yet unless you are contracting uncomfortably every 5-7 minutes or your water has broken. Don't have sex after the water is broken go to the hospital instead :-).
  5. If you have lost your mucus plug then you are about to deliver and you should not be having sex. The sperm will travel into the canal and could cause problems. I would ask the doctor, but I am sure with you signs you are probably by now having a baby... Congrats
  6. 1. At this stage I don't think there's anything alarming about the brown blood or "strings" in the bathwater, but I'd call your dr's office just to be sure. 2. As far as I know, the only thing that might happen if you have sex at this stage is you might go into labor. You probably think that's a good thing if you're 39 weeks!
  7. No... this is not the onset of labor, so no need to go to the hospital yet. If your water breaks, THEN go to the hospital with gusto! LOL. Sex should be safe - it's after your water breaks that you should not bc of risk of infection. Although, I caution you, being 39 weeks along, and dilated and effaced, it MIGHT bring on labor. So, be careful!! :-) Good luck!
  8. You may not have actually lost your plug yet. You could be losing bits and pieces of it, as it often happens. Please note that explusion of the mucous plug does not necessarily mean that labor is impending anytime very soon. You can lose your plug weeks before you deliver, obviously this won't be the case for you since you are 39 weeks, but many people will tell you that you are about to go into labor now, which is not always how it happens. The fact that you are fully effaced will make it easier for you to dilate, as effacement must be reached before you can dilate to ten. The mucous plug isn't anything to call the doctor about, but bring it up at your next visit. Be careful about asking such serious questions on here because some people don't know what they are talking about and you would be better off consulting your doctor. To prevent spontaneous contractions from the prostaglandins in your husbands semen, use a condom if you decide to have sex. Once your water breaks, in order to prevent infection you must abstain from sex from now until you get the heads up from your doctor at your 6-week check-up. Good luck and congratulations!!!
  9. yes it's still safe, it only becomes unsafe once your water breaks..so sex it up all you want..i lost mine last week and no labor for me..although im making my hubby have sex with me everynight until it happens! he's home now..so um...gotta go! lol
