How to fireproof a wall safe?
I have a wall safe already installed. It is not fireproof though. With the exception of tearing it out and buying a fireproof safe, is there a way I can make this one fire proof (or at least as fire proof as an economy fire proof wall safe)? Thanks

- because the firefighter will come to protect you.
- Since your safe isn't fireproof, your wall needs to be, or at the very least, the space around it. In either case, it means a nice concrete and steel project for you. I would also think that your safe door, or the access to it, would need some sort of fireproofing as well.
- If you can maybe you can try to apply a fireproof paint on it... As I overheard it somewhere, maybe there is.... check in your local hardware perhaps.
- You may be able to use expanding spray foam. You would need to check that its flame resistant. (i think it is) Then, with a hole saw bore a hole or two into the wall, below the safe. Maybe on the sides of the safe too. Spray in the foam and make sure that it fills the areas behind the wall surface. It will then expand and fill all the air gaps that would otherwise expose the safe to flames.
- How big is the safe. If the safe is large enough why not get a smaller fireproof box and place it inside the safe with the items you really want to keep safe. Just remember, no safe is truely fireproof. A fireproof safe generally protects for 1-3 hours at around 1700F depending on the rating. It's unlikely you can make it fireproof. Perlite and vermiculite are two of the most common ingredients in fire proof doors, cabinets as well as safes. You would need to surround the safe and seal the door. You can reduce the damage by encasing the safe with several layers of gyp board and insulation to create a makeshift fire wall. But the front and the seal of the door are going to be exposed rendering the encasement useless.
