What's a good safe remedy I can make here at home to keep my dog from licking a huge wound on his leg?
We live in NE CA in the mountains near where Mt. Lassen erupted. There volcanic rock and boulders all over and my dear gereatric dog seems to scrape the same place over and over until it's become the size of a silver dollar. I do all the anti bacterial things but when I try to dress the wound he can chew through it.

- use the coma things they use on dogs so when he trys to bite it he can't get it from one of your local vets
- Okay....this is silly, but works SO well....you will be amazed........... Milk of Magnesia is AWESOME for these superficial wounds....it is the compounded iron that causes the wound to dry out and heal quicker.
- Go to the vet ASAP. it could be tick,s or fleas. The dog can become very sick and could die.Br cause it could be a infection. Also the vet will tell about bombs to but in your house, Ir will kill all the ticks and fleas. When they lay there eggs they leave hounds eggs you can not see them
- Is he / she licking because its painful? That would be important, some dogs with painful arthritis will lick their leg raw. Try a bootie / bandage when the dog is outside. I LOVE a product called Dermagel for superficial wounds. It tastes bad and heals up wounds quikcly.
- You need to buy him an Elizabethian Collar (E-Collar) its the cone shaped color that allows the head of the dog to become slightly immobile so it will not be able to get to the wound. You may have to remove this collar in order for your dog to eat and drink...But until the wound is healed the E-collar and the antibiotics are the best thing for him. Also sometimes its worse to dress a wound because not enough oxygen can get to it. E-Collars are fairy cheap because they are only plastic and your vet should supply them. Call the Vet and ask where to get an E-Collar.
- I'm with the dog here- I don't do the 'antibacterial things' especially if they come in a tube and are creamy yuk! Do you have sage 'salvia officinalis' in the kitchen or garden? A strong tea of that is a good lotion to clear up scrapes and sores, and the smell might be more palatable to the dog. Also it is ok to drink, which might not be the case for the potions from the chemist. I would also suggest tisserand antiseptic cream - lavender, tea tree and ?? you can probably research the ingredients online.
- elizabethian collar- try not to let the dog keep reinjuring himself ....move the dog or restrict access to the offending scraper
