Safe mode ?'s?

I am trying to open my home computer into safe mode, b/c I believe there is a virus on the computer. My comp screen works all the up to the windows 98 screen & than goes to blackish blue & doesn't let me do anything else. Is there a way that I can still open it up in safe mode to see if I can still run a virus scan to try & save the computer? Okay, I was able to open it up in safe mode, but it doesn't remotely look normal. The top half of the screen is blue dots spaced out & the bottom half is almost normal with some blue dots. Does anyone know if that means it has a virus? Will I be able to use a virus scan in safe mode?

1. Press F8 while booting right adter the BIOS screen disappears. Press it a few times repeatedly to maximize the possibility of catching the prompt.
2. You either need to press F8 or control when it goes to boot to get into safe mode. If it won't even boot into safe mode, then there is probably a corrupt file keeping it from booting, and you would probably have to reinstall win98 to fix.
