I need to open my mom's EP Safe Deposit (model 300) but box is locked.?

My father gave me the combination years ago but has passed away. My mother is in a nursing home. I have the combination but cannot open the box. Any suggestions? Any special way to enter combinations or do I turn it so many times before I try to enter the combination????
