  1. If you really want to protect your documents, I would consider a safety deposit box at a local bank. You rent them by the year, and around here you can get one that is about 6x6 and about 18 inches deep for somewhere in the range of 25-35 dollars a year. These boxes would protect the document from both fire and theft. When you deal with small home safes, you have to consider that most could be picked up easily and carried off. If you get one large enough that it couldn't, then you are talking about it being heavy enough to require special delivery men to set it up. If you rent, the land lord might not like you having such weight in the apartment either. We have a small safe that my son always kept his stuff in. Worked on combination, but only weighed about 15 lbs. We have a large safe that came from a jewelry store that was going out of business. It required a special lift to set it in the basement, and we probably won't ever move it. This safe is good for guns and things that you may use but don't want exposed to other people. All of the paper documents are in the bank in a safety deposit box, (lot box). Some branch banks have the boxes to offer to make it convenient for quick stops on a frequent schedule.
