Question about vaults in fallout 3?

Can someone please explain why vault 101 is not like the others? why is it peaceful there and not a hellhole like the other vaults? also what was the true purpose of the vaults coz i know they were'nt made just to keep a few humans safe.

1. Vault 101 was an experiment vault that studied the effect of isolation in humans. They were born there, and they died there. They were also given fake radio messages that painted a bleak picture of the capital wasteland and discouraged anyone for leaving. the other vaults had other experiments going and very few were actually meant for the safety of humanity. The other vaults were all destroyed and horrible because most of these experiments went horribly wrong.
2. The Vaults were actually experiments to prepare humanity for the long journey to other planets on generational spaceships. The nuclear war provided the perfect (perhaps all too perfect) pretext to obtain volunteers. Some vaults were "control" vaults that did nothing but seal the people off from the world and it appears Vault 101 was one of those.
