Safe Luxury

When windy, the outside wall of house separates from ceiling slightly. How do I make it more ridgid?

The wall that moves runs parallel to the roof joists. A review in the attic does not show any supports tying the wall into the joists. I thought about cables from one wall to the opposite wall or a 2x6 lagged to a few ceiling joists then to the wall. I don't know what is structurally safe to do yet prevents that wall from moving.

  1. If the house is new I would call the local building inspector and report the builder. If not, a framing contractor should be able to help.
  2. Hurricane straps are the ticket, Use one to attach each truss to the top plate. http://www.bookmarki.com/articles.asp?id=109
  3. You do not have the required number of roof vents. Those things are used to relieve air pressure between what is inside the attic and what the outside wind causes. If one does not have an adequate amount of roof vents during a windstorm the roof can flex so much it can literally be sucked right off the house. That difference in pressure times such a large number of square feet in a house's roof is a tremendous total force, probably in the tons if there is not enough roof vents.
  4. you should have the same amount of air volume getting out of the attic that is coming in, but, you should definitely have the roof attached to the walls, all of them. In the event of extreme weather, you will lose the roof, and probably the house. They sell metal straps that will allow you to attache the roof to the wall.
  5. This type of thing is unheard of.Get your roof fastened down before you loose it
