Is it safe to turn off the gas to a wall heater?

Hi, I have one of those ubiquitous southern California tall gas heaters built into the wall of the living room, and I will never use it. So I figure it's just wasting gas, and besides that it generates a small amount of heat, and I sure don't need anything making this place hotter when summer rolls around. So just to make absolutely sure, there's nothing unsafe about turning off the pilot and the gas inside the heater and just leaving it that way indefinitely, is there? Thanks!

  1. no problem shut of the gas valve ...
  2. yes it may explode call your local gas company
  3. Yes just turn it off no problems
  4. sure
  5. No problem at all. Turn the control to the off position, and sometimes there is an in line valve right before the valve. If it is there, turn it off. The handle on it should be turned to the side. If it is on it is in line with the gas flow, turn it to the side so it is blocking the gas flow. You can't turn it the wrong way as it will only turn one way 1/4 turn
