2. Yes, it's safe. You want to get the hernia repaired before the intestines get stuck in the hernia sac (incarcerated hernia) or have their blood supply impaired (strangulated hernia). The mesh has to hold the intestines in. If it's an abdominal (ventral, incisional) hernia, the omentum will sit between the mesh and your intestines.
