Safe Luxury

is it safe for me to change my own meter box? or should i call a trained electriction?

im speaking of my electric meter box that pertains to my home electric utilitiy service. i have a new meter box i need to replace my old one. It looks rather easy to replace, however i dont want to become a light show lol. Something tells me this calls for an electriction. If its simple and safe please let me know.

  1. I've been an electrical engineer for 35 years, and even though not licensed as an electrician, I can still wire up circuit distribution systems up to 480v. But I've never been in a meter box, and because of that, I'm not inclined to go poking around in one. But even if I were, I think there are legal considerations involved, such as compatibility. One, it's not your meter installation; it's the utility's installation. They own it. You also might want to consider checking with the electric utility to find out if your new box can even be used in their hookup, or what is necessary to ensure its compatibility.
  2. First call an electrician. No matter what after that you need to call the electric company so that they can verify everything was installed correctly.
