Safe Luxury

Do you Recommend any programmes to keep my computer safe?

I already use McAfee but i was wondering if you could tell me some programmes that would keep my computer safe? My sister has McAfee and her laptop is starting to run pretty slow.I have Vista home premium, soon i'm thinking of upgrading to windows 7. It's a new laptop and it runs smoothly, i don't want it to get full of viruses. So if you guys could tell me some good anti virus sites to get a decent program to protect it, it would be great. Thanks.

  1. The free versions of AVG run in combination with Spybot work well for me,,
  2. I,ve had a Sony VIO now for 3 years and have had Norton security with it since day 1.I,ve yet to have any problems(touch wood).Hope this helps.
  3. Oh you're in the same situation as me :( VISTA SUCKS, MCAFEE SUCK, MICROSOFT SUCK IN GENERAL... If you want a good security program, try Advanced System Protection... erm no url on my person but google it :) Don't get AVG, it also SUCKS. Trust me, if you want to use your laptop for non-evil things, get security, I just got nuked :(
  4. Try this anti malware bytes from www.cnet.com But if it ain't broke don't fix it.
  5. McAfee and Norton are both system-intensive resource hogs that will definitely slow down your system and drain your wallet by requiring you to pay after the free trial. Download a free, less-intrusive anti-virus client like AVG Free ( http://free.grisoft.com/ ); make sure you follow link to download AVG free, not the full suite or a Pro version). Also download a malware scanner like MalwareBytes ( http://www.malwarebytes.org/ ). Once both are downloaded, remove McAfee via the Programs and Features section of the Control Panel, install AVG, and then install Malwarebytes. Run scans as requested att install and run a malwarebytes scan regularly (the AVG scan should happen automatically).
  6. Comodo internet security. It's free but very effective. It found viruses on my computer that other programs had missed. It is a little enthusiastic and I'm not going to lie, it will take a while to add everything to the exception list as it blocks most connections, e.g online gaming, but it's a really good piece of software for free, at least as good as a commercial one.
  7. AVG is very good, its helped me several times :)
  8. recommended programs: Avast, McAfee, Norton, Trend Micro, and Spyware doctor (you can get this from Google's ''pack'' option. If you want a more flexible version, download/install it, then uninstall it and it will allow you to remove viruses as well as scan). I personally recommend Trend Micro (note: you have to pay for it) because it is by far the fastest in finding viruses, and is the most advanced in removing them. Spyware doctor (you can pay or follow the shortcut for a free, less powerful version) is also really good at finding viruses, but is a little slower. However, it gives more information on the viruses. The other three are not as much recommended, but Avast and McAfee are free, and do a decent job. Norton, on the other hand, is required to pay, and takes up a lot of computer space.
  9. Microsoft released a free anti-virus/anti-spyware program called Microsoft Security Essentials a few weeks ago. It's quite good. So long as your copy of Windows is legitimate, you can use it for free. Many of the commercial anti-virus programs, like Norton and McAfee, are overpriced and consume a large amount of system resources, slowing down one's computer. MSE is rather lightweight, simple, and thorough in its detection of viruses and whatnot. Of course, the responsibility for keeping your computer virus-free lies squarely on your shoulders. The internet can be a dangerous place -- don't go visiting shady websites, giving away personal information, or clicking on suspicious links. Stay away from file-sharing sites, as they often are a source of malware. Internet Explorer, while improved in recent versions, is often vulnerable to security problems. I recommend that you use a different web browser, such as Mozilla's excellent Firefox browser. It's available for free, and is usually much more secure than Internet Explorer. You should also make sure that Windows Updates are turned on, so that your computer will automatically download and install the latest security updates from Microsoft. Additionally, you should ensure that any third-party programs are also updated on a regular basis.
  10. I like to use both Malwarebytes and Superantispyware with my Anti-Virus program. I also use Mozilla Firefox browser with NOSCRIPT, WOT and AdBlockPlus. The most important thing you can do is to keep Windows up to date along with other programs like flash players, Java or anything that needs a security patch. Always research into anything you are about to download. Delete email attachments. If you know who they are from, first save it then run a scan then open it.
