Safe Luxury

When is it safe to interact with your Syrian hamster after you bring it home?

So I'm getting a Syrian Hamster soon, and I just want to know when I will be able to hold it, put it in it's ball, play with it.. etc.. etc. Also, when should I first feed it after it comes home? Immediately? And one more thing: Should I put a towel or something over the top of the cage to keep it quiet and dark?

  1. I had a Syrian hamster. I put food in her cage before I placed her in it. I started taming her right away. When your hamster learns to trust you, then you can play with her, hold her, etc. I put a towel over my hamster's cage because it helps with the smell. It also warms the cage and makes it a comfortable dark. Warning: If you give your ham a towel, it may chew it up to use in it's nest. 2. The towel is a great idea i do it when my hamsters are pregnant to prevent to much stress on the mom. Make sure you have food and water in the cage when you mouse gets into its new home. Give you hamster at least a day before holding it so that it can get used to its cage.
  3. 2-3 days you can put a towel if you want but low stress is the most important thing
  4. Take it slow... 2nd day try sticking a sunflower seed through it's cage bars and see if it takes it... 3rd day open the cage and do it... 4th day see if it takes it from the middle of your hand. don't rush it.... I rushed into holding my hamster on my first hamster and he never got tamed....
  5. Give it a day or two and then you can start holing them.Keep their room quiet.
  6. I am glad to hear that you are getting a syrian hamster soon. I also have a syrian hamster so I have some experience in this case. First start talking to it.Do this for 1-2 weeks depending on your hamsters excitement.Slowly it will start to recognize your voice ans start responding to it. Second try to put your hand in the cage but don't touch the hamster. Do this for at least a week.So it can be familiar to your scent. Third you can feed your hamster anytime. If you're getting your hamster in the morning then feed it when it comes out of it's house. But keep track of the time you're feeding it because you should always feed a hamster in the same time.Do the same if you're getting it in he morning. Fourth you should never put a towel on the cage. Because hamsters will chew on it and may become sick. As long as you dont make too much sound it's okay. They like a bit of sunlight. GLAD TO HELP YOU!
  7. when you first get it make sure its cage is all ready for it. have food and water in it along with bedding. wait a day or to for your hamster to adjust to its new home. when you interact with it move slowly. hold a treat in your hand so it knows your not a threat. after you hold it for a while you can play with it to. good luck. if you have anymore questions you can contact me.
