Do local banks keep precious metals in their vaults, and how much cash would a local bank have on hand?
For instance, how much gold bullion, if any, would be kept in their vault. How much cash would be kept in their vault? It's interesting to me.

- are you asking about US banks? if so, probably the only gold they have in there at all is in safe deposit boxes, which are rented out by individuals, the banks don't have access to open them once they are rented out. the US currency went off the gold standard a long time ago, so the green paper money that we use gets its value from the government, not from gold. i think the treasury still has some precious metals though.
- Thinking of a little robbery, are we? No, banks in this era do not keep big piles of gold bars in their vault. The amount of cash varies based on the day (Fridays are busier because of pay days often falling on Fridays) but there is not as much as you think certainly not much more than $100,000 in a branch bank. The main vault at a large headquarters bank will have more. I would start with convenience stores and work your way up to banks.
