Why will my computer not shut down properly?
I am trying to solve a problem on my sisters computer. She is using XP home and whenever we go to shut it down it will not shut down all the way - it eventually comes up with the message 'it is now safe to switch off your computer' and then we have to use the power off button!? The stand by button had also disappeared but that has now been fixed after I installed service pack 3 but the machine will still not close down without the power button being pushed??? Any ideas???

- Check for updates or networking updates. It is usually problems with the network drivers on the computer. Once you have update and/or diagnosed any problems it should shut down fine
- It could be malware running, run anti-malware http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php its free
- you probably have your antvirus set to scan @shutdown.do no harm to check settings on virus program.
- This is quite a funny thing that only used to happen on windows 95 windows 98 windows 98SE dont worry about it, it still shuts down it is just slightly odd lol
- Its a feature on XP Home to do with advanced power management, i don't there is anything you can do.
- That's supposed to happen you clot! Only certain versions of XP and all versions of Vista automatically power off! Everyone has that. Well, apart from those that have Vista and same XP users.
