how to clean vinyl records at home?

i recently inherited some old vinyl records from the 80s. they were in a box, usually just in the paper or cardboard cover that they were stored in 20 years ago. they are really dusty in the center where the label is but the dust isn't normal dust. it doesn't all come off with a swipe of the finger. how do i clean my old records at home in a SAFE way that won't damage the records?

  1. RCA makes a vinyl record care system. It comes with a cleaning fluid and a soft fabric cleaning brush.
  2. wd-40.com
  3. The above answer is correct with using a specific vinyl record cleaning system, but, if the dust/dirt is excessive the records can be GENTLY washed in lukewarm running water with a gentle detergent. Rinse well, and GENTLY pat dry with a soft dry, lint free cloth and then store. Check this site:http://www.instructables.com/id/Cleaning-Vinyl-Records/ Good Luck! PS Some records are valuable, especially if they are playable with pristine album covers eg 'The Go Betweens' and other 80's indie groups.
  4. Nice Soft Cloth With Damp warm water
  5. get some steel wool and some soap and take it from there
