Green burial/Home burial laws?

I'm looking for information on laws regarding burial in the state of Illinois. If anyone can direct me to a website, I would appreciate it. My husband and I have been discussing the possibility of being buried on our property (we currently own ten acres). I've been reading up on green burials and really like the idea of being buried without the involvement of a funeral home, embalming fluid, concrete vaults, and the expense it entails. Any info you can share? I have read somewhere that if you live in a rural area (outside of city limits) and own a plot of at least 10 acres, you can set aside a portion of your own land for a burial plot. I'm trying to find out if this is true.

  1. That is not only going to involve state laws but also city/county laws.
  2. Don't know about where you live, but usually you don't need all the chemicals and trappings that people usually go in for. You probably won't be able to bury on your own land though. Crikey, if we all did that future homeowners would be digging up corpses every time they wanted to dig a swimming pool or plant a tree. Imagine that. Most graveyards are owned by municipalities where I am from. You can't just go sticking corpses any where you want.
  3. I do know it can be done but it does require you get permits from the county or state to do so. Contact your county clerk and they could probably tell you what is required.
