Safe Luxury

Does anybody make an in-wall gun safe for studs on 24 inch centers?

Seems they're only made for studs on 16" centers.

  1. Reason is because 16 on center is standard building practice. 16 on center means it's a load bearing wall. A 24 on center is non load bearing and is usually just a separation wall between rooms. Which more than likely means just sheet rock and no insulation. Use an outside facing wall and get a 16 on center safe. Your arms will be better protected by the outside structure on the back side. It'd take no amount of time to just slice thru both 2X4's and two layers of thin sheet rock with a portable sawzall. Then just carry off entire safe. Even if you need to get two 16 inch safes? You'll be better served.
  2. I would think that an interior wall would be far superior to putting a safe in an outside wall and having to remove all of that insulation that would normally keep your house warm or cool depending upon the season. My guess would be that 24" OC walls are not very common with people that want in-wall gun safes. If you are wanting the extra capacity that an extra 8" would provide, you are probably screwed. If it is just a mounting problem, you could run two horizontal 2x4s between the existing studs at the top and bottom of the safe and run a vertical 2x4 at 16" OC from the existing stud that you plan to use. You would probably have to do a little dry wall work.
