What software is best/safest for accessing my home computer while I'm on the road?

I operate a home based business, but I'm on the road a lot. Sometimes I need to get files from my home office, but my wife isn't always available to send them. I'm not sure what software is best and safest for this type of action. I'd hate to have someone hack into my system while I'm not looking. I know PC Anywhere has been around a long time, but what is your opinion of which is best and why?
