What is the safest/best way to store/organize digital photos?

Ever since my mom switched over to a digital camera, she has been worried about losing her precious memories forever. She has tons of memory sticks, prints from shutterfly, and a bunch of them saved on her computer. What can I buy her for christmas to organize and safely store all these pictures?? She is NOT tech savvy at all so it must be easy to use. any ideas? thanks!

1. An external hard disc seems to be a safe bet.
