How to get the pulse gun in Fallout: New Vegas?

I have picked up the pulse gun already but the mission objective is still to "recover the pulse gun"? I'm doing the mission, "I could make you care" with Veronica and my robot dog in vault 34. (In case that's relevant.) I can recover the gun again if I need to because I saved before I picked it up, but I've already done this like five times. Any tips?

1. Located inside the Vault 34 Armory in a very hard locked chest. The Armory door is initially locked, you must access the terminal in the Overseer's office to open it. It can be obtained with an Lockpick skill of 100, but a key to the chest can also be obtained through a companion (Veronica)'s loyalty quest. There is a chance that it can be purchased from the Silver Rush in Freeside. and one can be looted from Fiends near Horowitz Farmstead.
