How to lighten dark hair without coloring or bleaching it (safe&easy at home)?

First of all, I use permanent hair die (very light blonde, I get the same color, no mater the warm/cold shades of the color creme), such as Garnier Naturals, to lighten my roots periodically. However, since I generally get the same result, no matter the color I choose (as long as it's light enough), given the fact that my natural hair color is a dark brown with red tints that practically gets lightened by the hair die formula added to the coloring creme to a gingery medium blonde/light brown, I am looking for some other ways to lighten my hair without using color creme and as lesser chemicals and peroxide as possible, no more strong smells etc. My hair is close to black at the roots, so things like lemon juice, chamomile, vinegar etc. or products like SunIn have little to zero effects of lighting My hair is also brittle, dry, frizzy at the tips, so I only lighten my hair at the roots, no further touch-up's needed. I DO NOT want to completely change the color of my hair (make it platinum blonde/sandy light blonde etc.) NOR do I want to pore peroxide on my head/scalp. I want to lighten my natural color as much as possible in one application every 3-4 weeks or after every shampooing, without going to a saloon and without long term effects on the scalp, roots, my lungs etc. So, if you tried any products that could do that and are sold over the counter, in supermarkets, please share some reviews, tips, recommendations on how to easily and safely use them at home. Thanks!

  1. I've been coloring my hair for a VERY LONG time, since 8th grade. I also have a light/medium brown natural color. As much as I hate to say this, I dont know of anything that will lighten your roots to the shade you desire (no more orangey, gingery or lighter brown) other than a professional visit to your hair stylist for a bleach and color. Maybe just try it once. Oops, you said you didn't want to do this :( I was so scared the first time I had my hair bleached (I do this every 10 weeks...lol). My hair stylist only leaves it on the length you are supposed to, uses a toner and then deep conditions it. I continue this regime at home, with a regular deep conditioner I apply like Aussie 3-minute miracle. Also, may I recommend trying to frost either with foils or pulling thru a cap....when your hair starts to grow out it wont look as sharp or as noticeable at the root area. Hope this helps :)
