Are The Exumas in The Bahamas safe?

Until recently, everything I have read says that there is virtually no crime on Exuma and the people are very welcoming and helpful. However, I have been finding alot of online postings as of lately talking about an increase in crime regarding rental home break in's, petty theft, even a recent murder. And since we are renting a home on the beach, this is very unnerving to say the least. This is such a beautiful place and I don't want to be in any kind of danger while there on my wedding anniversary with my wife. We have already booked our trip and thought we had done a fair amount of research...until now of course. Please....if anyone is from The Bahamas or frequents Exuma, please advise if these are just isolated incidents or something I should genuinely be concerned with? My gut instinct tells me everything will be fine because 99% of the reviews I've read from those who have travelled there have been nothing but positive....so hopefully I will be proved wrong!

  1. No worries my friend. I live in Ft Lauderdale and actually have a private pilot for a friend. He often fly's me over to Normans Cay , Staniel cay - great friend to have ! The Exuhmas are simply a unknown gem so keep it to yourself ! Have your camera on you as aerial photos are from another planet ! Have a great time and as of 2 weeks ago the bugs are here ! Bring snorkeling gear , sunscreen , your Ipod and have a blast . Bring a GPS and rent a little boat and go explore your own little island . Snorkel for conch and bring them back - many bars will cook them for you . I know of many litttle secret's in the Exuhma's if you need any help . Hotels , flights ect.
  2. The Exhumas are the best, safest and little known parts of the Bahamas.... don't worry about them.. just go and have fun.
