- Do you honestly think that "most" Soldiers/Marines etc don't come home? Or get maimed or hurt? If that were the case, then you'd see alot more efforts being taken to get our troops home from the Middle East. You have a higher chance of death or injury from a car accident on your way to work or school, than from deployment. And if that still doesn't alleviate your fears, then perhaps the military is not for you.
- It's 99+% in the Army and Marines. It's 99.999% for Navy and Air Force.
- I've had four tours of duty, on my third I was injured via shrapnel from an IED, that's the worse that's happened, and I was able to deploy again within a year. Soldiers die every week, around 4-8 die from all the services in Afghanistan every week, and 6-7 of them are IED or small arms fire. The 8th is usually complacency. The death percentage is less than 1%. There are however quite a few guys that come home maimed/wounded. Still, not a large number. And yes, unfortunately, the country would begin freaking out and calling for all troops to come home when things got serious, because I guess all people not in the military, know everything about how war and conflict works. (Sarcasm).
- More people die in their homes from accidents than the war effort. You should not fear deployment.
- Extremely high. It also depends on service. The Army is has the highest casualty (KIA,WIA) followed by the Marine Corps. The Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard have extremely light casualty numbers. Bottom line: unless you're a Grunt or some other type of supporting combat arms MOS, You aren't going to encounter anything detrimental to you.
- Pretty good. like others have said you have a better chance of getting hurt in your car at home then you do "over there". Sadly there have been months where more service members have died from suicide then in combat. Additionally danger levels are based also upon occupation. If you are clerk in an office and there is nothing wrong with that as someone needs to do that job. Your chance of injury or death is much lower then the EOD guys and gals.
- Your chances are excellent. I think you percentage is right on. My nephew went to Afganniland 3 times and Iraq twice and then almost got killed jumping out of a plane here in the states.
- less than 3% of all servicemembrs who have deployed( and this includes those who deployed more than once) are injured or killed. and of those that are.. well a significant portion are from accidents not IED or combat related, or due to natural causes.
