What size screws to mount safe to wall?

For a 5 foot tall x 2 feet in width safe (under 150 pounds when empty), what size screws should be used to mount safe to a wall into the studs? Interested in the following: Type of screw? Width or screw? Length of screw?

  1. A REALLY SET OF BIG SCREWS, what you can handle with your tools , pre drill and use wax on the screw to help avoid splitting,
  2. Bolt it to the floor if possible, not the wall. That way your bolts will be going into 2x6s at least instead of 2x4s (not to mention, it would go thru floor and subfloor as well, instead of some lousy sheet rock).. I would use 5/8 lag bolts 4" (at least!) in length. Then use an angle grinder to round off the top of the bolts so they can't be undone.
  3. Oh my, I would be nervous putting it onto the wall. I think besides going into the studs I would also use a couple of toggle bolts in the middle for better support. They can hold up to a couple hundred pounds if you buy the right size. Also, I hope you are putting it close to a corner or door as they have more framing there. I would use a 3/8 lag bolt that is 4 1/2 inches long. Only because you need to go through plaster or drywall to get to the studs. You should make a pilot hole first into the wall so you don't crack the studs inside. Also use some fender washers with them to give added support to the mounting holes. For the toggle bolts, use ones that are 4 inches long because if you get one too short it will not clear the plaster or drywall and won't open up . Make sure you put those at least three inches away from any studs. You want the butterfly to be able to open in the wall. I recommend 3/8 in those also. If you need to drill a hole in the safe for the toggle bolts to go through, I would use a titanium bit or a tungsten carbide. You need to drill slowly first and use a center punch to make a dent in it first so your drill doesn't spin. I guess you can figure I go above and beyond whatever it is I'm doing. I follow the instructions but then add a few of my own.
