Is it safe to give out your IP address?

Is it safe to give out your IP address on the internet? I had computer problems on our home network and I gave out our IP address on a computer forum. Is this dangerous?

  1. Dont give out your IP. people can hack your computer that way
  2. Why the fuck would you give out your IP cause you have computer problems?!
  3. Uh, no, don't do that.
  4. Not really, but I wouldn't throw mine around for just any reason. Substitute x.x.x.x for it where you later explain what you mean by that, or something similar. They'll probably be used to that practice. Cheers.
  5. Um... the forum already has your IP address. It's the address that your computer (actually, router) uses to identify itself. EDIT: Can you guys stop misinforming him? It's annoying to clean up afterwards. 6. its not dangerous, but its very stupid as hackers can hack you even easier than normal as you have supplied them the I.P addy you run from, go delete the post before its too late
  7. If you do, I hope you keep a decent firewall up and running all the time. While it's true that every Web and Internet transaction carries your IP address with it so the site knows where to send the response, that doesn't mean every member of the forum has active knowledge of the address. Providing it in the text, while not automatically disastrous, does carry some risk. Like providing a phone number or street address, it raises your hand as a target for malicious activity. In other words, it's not a good idea. Hope that helps.
