Is the Dodge Avenger reliable and safe?

I'll be getting my license soon, and the only car at home is a 2008 Dodge Avenger. Reviews discuss the cheap interior, and I couldn't agree more with them. It's the very base model, with the 2.4l 4-cyl engine. It seems to be a good running vehicle engine wise, and the only issue I have is the poor quality interior. The materials are very bad. Does poor interior quality = poor safety? The car has about 85,000 miles on it. I'd like to hear from people who know about this car....people who have it, have HAD it, driven it, been in an accident with it, etc. Thanks! :-)
