Safe Luxury

Can police destroy your safe box in your home if you refuses to open it?

If the police have a search warrant at your house and they want to open your safe, can they force open it? I know they probably could if the dog thinks it is drugs in there, but could they if they didn't have any good reason for it?

  1. If they have a search warrant then they have reason to believe you are hiding something so yes.
  2. Assuming the police have a warrant, the police could destroy the safe and arrest the owners for failing to obey the police in opening the safe.
  3. If they have a warrant, they can blow it to kingdom-come if they desire.
  4. If the search warrant includes the safe, yes they can. And if you do not get arrested for any crime, it will be replaced at your expense.
  5. If the warrant allows searching the safe, they can legally do whatever is necessary to search the safe. A warrant to search for drugs would cover any safes, unless it was written by a FOOL. The existence of the safe, combined with sufficient reason to issue a warrant for something that would fit in the safe ARE good reason to search the safe.
  6. Search warrant + your refusal to voluntarily open it = good reason to force the safe open.
