Just bought Fallout 3 on Steam and it crashes on launch?

The Fallout 3 copy is up to date. I can run New Vegas on close to the highest setting on this computer. I have a Windows 7 i5 6gb RAM with a high end NVIDIA video card. I can't even make it out of the vault without getting the Fallout 3 has stopped working error. Why won't this game run for more than 10 minutes without crashing?

1. You sure you have all the patches? Fallout 3 and Fallout new vegas are notorius for being buggy (try calling customer supprt)
