No monthly payment home security system?

We live in a relatively safe neighborhood but my son is on the first floor and we are on the second. Does anyone know any good companies out there that have affordable home security?

1. All depends on where you live. Call around to local companies and get quotes (quotes should always be free). You won't find a company that has free monitoring, that's how they make their money but you should be able to get a good comparison of what's available to you. Also try asking around (neighbors, friends) to see if they have any good or bad experiences with certain companies. And this is really important, read the fine print!! You have to be careful because you could get locked into a nasty contract. The company I work for doesn't put any customer under contract, people can cancel whenever the want but I'm pretty sure that is rare, most want you to sign so they can guarantee payment. Also be cautious of what they install... ADT for example offers a "free" system if you sign a 3 year contract... the only thing is that "free" system usually only consists of 2 door contacts and 1 motion detector. Most people have more then 2 exterior doors in their house and you sure as heck want more then 1 motion as that only covers one room. I highly suggest installing heat or smoke detectors. As well you have the option of installing glassbreak detectors, window contacts, low temperture devices, sump pump sensors, high water detectors... all that costs extra on top of ADT's $40 a month monitoring fees ($40 is high in my opinion).
