Who can I call to see if my home is fire safe?
I want to see if my house is fire safe...A friends house recently burned down because of some type of electrical problem behind his washer and dryer in the garage, and my home is a bit old so I want to make sure that we don't have the same problem... I would want them to check mostly my electrical outlets and stuff like that

- Start with the fire department. They can probably give you reliable information on who can check things out for you. If you don't get any help there ask your insurance company. They may have someone they reccommend!
- At times the local fire district performs inspections. Mostly a general walkthrough. If it is electrical that you are concerned with an electrician would be the guy to call. Most fire safety is common sense if you stop to think about it. Even an electrician can't predict a failure of a component. I would talk to the local fire district first. Check on line for home fire safety, there are several good sites with things to look for and check lists.
- The guys in the red truck are your best bet. An electrician only wants to make repairs so he can make money. If you mention this to your insurance agent he may want to raise your rates. Some firemen do odd jobs on their days off and will probably do repairs for far less than anyone else. (Yes they do get licenses to do the work.) I would pay a fireman licensed in that field than anyone else. A fireman friend of mine is licensed as a general contractor.
