Tornadoes and keeping your kids safe?

I'm babysitting tonight, I'm watching my twin cousins (3 yrs) and there sister (7 yrs). Anyway, we live up in North Texas (Denton) and there's going to be some pretty bad weather tonight. The parents won't be home until late, so what do I do if we have a tornado?

  1. Go to the basement or cellar, stay away from windows. Keep a flashlight, blankets to protect from broken glass, a battery powered radio and some bottled water in the basement or cellar. Used to live in tornado country and we kept a spot prepared for tornados.
  2. Take them to the basement or cellar (if there is one). If there isn't, go to an inside closet without windows and close yourselves in there. Have a hard book or something to protect their necks and heads. If not that, try heading to a neighbor's house if they have a basement. That isn't a smart move though, so only do that if there is no interior windowless room or basement.
  3. Hey there, I live in North Texas too! They are saying the weather could be severe, possible tornadic activity. Do they have a portable radio and flashlight? Be sure to ask them where the safest place in the house to go if there is severe weather. Make a plan now, incase there is a tornado. Keep a listen out for the tornado sirens and turn your radio to KRLD (Am 1080) They will keep you updated on the weather and will tell you if you need to take cover or not. Steer clear of windows, and make a plan to rally up pets if they have any. If you and the girls do end up having to take cover, STAY CALM! Little kids feed off of your fear. Best of luck, and hopefully the storms won't be severe!
