My muffler part of my exhaust fell off, Is it safe to drive still?

On the way home last night part of my exhaust fell off. Its the muffler box and the pipe that comes out at the back of the car. Apart from making a bit of a noise is it safe to drive? The fumes are now coming out of the remaining part of the pipe which is about half way along the underside of the car. I need to get to work tonight. Thanks all. FORGOT TO ASK: Will the heat coming out of it be an issue?

  1. yeah it s safe. It may just be very load.
  2. You can drive short distances with it. I wouldn't make any long trips ( fumes ).
  3. if the car has a cat. converter it will most likely not hurt the engine. Sucking cold air into the manifold after shutting down a hot engine can cause damage. The muffer stops return air from doing this as well as keeping your car quite. Other then maybe getting a ticket for excessive noise, go to work tonight and get it fixed asap.
  4. The exhaust fumes are blown away when traveling down the highway, but it's possible some could be drawn into the car even then. However, if you keep some windows open, I think you can drive it for a day or two. Worst case is when your sitting with the car idling for long periods with all the windows closed. Carbon monoxide could build up in the car and you may not realize it. Don't worry about the added heat under the car. Just don't sit still and let the engine idle any longer than you have to.
