Low tech home security tricks and measures.?

I am thinking of leaving the Middle Eastern country, of which I reside, for a period of time and I'm curious as to what security measures I can take to safeguard my home, albeit I have little of value. The Middle East is mostly safe from break ins, but it does happen. Please don't suggest a gun because I wouldn't be around to use it during a period of absence, nor a dog since I would have to have someone take care of it every day for me. But, there are other tricks and measures that I could use. Please give me some tips. Thank you.

There are several low tech solutions, these can range from the simple and physical like bars in windows to the more psychological such as making sure your garbage is brought out on garbage day and you mail is taken in.
