What must I do in order to convert a word document so it is Mac computer safe?(Details inside)?

I have to write an article for my internship at home. My computer is a PC. I was going to write my article on Mircosoft Word and then put it on my jumpdrive. Then go to my internship to edit it and finalize it. But, my internship only uses Mac computers. It uses Mircosoft Word, too but it's specialized for the Mac. Can I just save the file as a document or do I need to safe it as something else? Sorry there was typo : save, not safe. (on the last sentence) If there's anymore typos, sorry. P.S. I love how I plan on going into writing and I'm like, the worst at grammer and spelling if I don't have spell check. Nice. Humor yourself.

1. I am pretty sure you just have to save it normally. But if you have office 2008 save it in the older format (Save as word 97-2003)
