  1. If I've read this right and If you have started in safe mode (F8 at Start-up), then Windows only loads the bare minimum of drivers for the computer. In safe mode you will have noticed that the screen resolution drops to 800x600, which is XP's native resolution with no video drivers loaded. Likewise sound, usb and Lan drivers are not loaded, so with all of the drivers not running on your computer it has has no connection to the outside world. Safe mode is a diagnostic environment, but surprisingly takes longer to load than a normal Windows start-up so depending on the age of your machine it will seem to go blank for a while. Without your machine in front of me it is difficult to say exactly what the problem is, but if you can add some more details I'll see if I can help. If the machine is going to the screen that gives the option without you pressing F8 at start up, the first thing I'd check (I know it sounds daft) that the F8 key is not stuck down as I've seen a similar problem at work a number of times.
