How can I work round or condition myself to work from 8am to 6pm rather than 4pm to 2am?
I'm a chronic night owl who is finding it difficult to settle down to a full day of work. I can't seem to start serious work until around 3 or 4pm then I can work till 2 or 3pm. As my office is not in a safe neighbourhood, i can't stay late at the office. If i try to continue at home, it takes a while for me to get the flow back. It's really affecting my work time and I am getting into all kinds of trouble so i need help asap

- Force yourself to do it. If you do it several times it will become a habit. Be disciplined and focus and you can do anything. Your body will adjust. That is the great thing about being humans, we are built to adjust to change.
- Are there things in your social life that are causing this behavior? Drinking too much coffee, eating your meals at strange times, dare I say taking recreational narcotics, surfing the web, playing computer games? Maybe you need to think about regulating your sleep pattern, going to bed earlier, getting up earlier, getting more exercise.. reducing the amount you smoke, drink or take caffeine so that when it comes to bedtime you can sleep and get up. This way your body adapts to getting itself ready for a normal day during daylight hours.
- I just have to agree. Your can adjust to change. It will take time and perseverance.
- As your office is not in a safe neighbourhood, you can't stay late at the office........? If you try to continue at home it takes a while to get the flow back? You have a very strange job, apparently. And now you are getting into all sorts of trouble? -maybe you are unemployable. You're right about one thing , though- You DO need help. Maybe you should turn to alcohol, which can be a great comfort in times such as you describe.
- I'm retired but its a simple condition to over come. On your next days off stay awake for 24 hours if possible. Go to sleep when its late about 10-11pm, your best sleep is between 1a - 5a, you will be so tired at this time frame that your body will except the new conditions. Continue this for a week, make yourself keep these hours if possible, bed by 10p and up by 6:30 - 7a, even on your days off. Keep yourself on a schedule, like this will condition yourself to new time frame with benefits at work. I was in the military for 20+yrs and had many different hours to tolerate. It works, I know !
- I am required to change shifts regularly and sometimes its not easy. However, you can adjust to working different shifts and in time your body will settle into this new routine. You may have difficulty sleeping at night to start with but again your body will get used to it and adjuct your 'internal clock'. Keep at it and it will all work out.
